R.A. Smith Custom Fly Rods

FAQ's

Do’s and Don’ts

  1. Go Fishing!  That is what these rods were made to do, even the most elaborate ones.  Bamboo is tough, more so than graphite.
  2. Don’t leave the fly rod on the dash board.  It gets hot enough there to ruin the varnish and soften the bamboo enough to cause a set. (It is hard on the fly line, too!)
  3. Alternate the tips since they get the most flexing.
  4. Don’t purposely chase large fish with undersized tackle.  It’s hard on the fish, too.
  5. Watch out for doors, windows, low ceilings, and fans.
  6. Store the rod after it’s DRY in the rod sock and in the tube.  If you want to display the rod, do so with it unassembled and sufficiently supported.
  7. Don’t store assembled and standing in a corner.  That will cause a set.
  8. Overtime, a mild set may develop.
  9. The cork may be cleaned with soap and water, comet cleanser works on bad stains.
  10. Waxing the rod occasionally is a great protectant.
  11. Clean the ferrules with alcohol or mineral spirits.  Do not lubricate.
  12. Any rod can be broken if the rod is held in a vertical position when landing fish.
  13. Fight fish with the rod at no more 30 degrees or so.  This forces the rod to bend in the mid and butt sections and will tire the fish quicker.  This is a must for catch and release.
  14. Bamboo is not delicate or brittle.  Light weight, full flexing should be used for what they were designed.  Heavier, stiffer rods are for bigger, tougher quarry.
  15. Go Fishing!  Even if the rod is damaged, it can be fixed.
Warranty
I fully guarantee my materials and workmanship.  If something fails and it’s my fault, I will fix it free.  Normal wear and tear and accidents are beyond my control and responsibility.  Any damage can be fixed for a modest fee.Upon receiving your new fly rod, please examine it and lawn cast it. I want my customers to be happy with their purchase.  I will allow a 5 day examination period.  If any thing is unacceptable please notify me with 5 days. (longer if pre-arranged) and return the rod in unused condition.  I will then refund the purchase price or replace the rod.

What about stuck ferrules

This is a situation that is almost always due to dirty ferrules.  When pulling ferrules apart, you should hold your hands far apart.  This causes a straight line effort.  When assembling the rod, push the ferrules together with your hands held close together.  Never twist the ferrules.  If they get sticky, clean them.

Why Short Rods (  8’ or shorter)?

This is actually a lengthy subject, the short version is pure physics.  Shorter rods of any material require less effort to cast than longer rods at normal distances.  They are better at short distances where long rods become clumsy.  Lee Wulff liked short rods. Longer rods actually make landing a fish more problematic.
